Thanks very much. It’s my great pleasure to be here this evening at the first UK Passivhaus conference. And to meet people united by a passion for improving the energy efficiency of our buildings.

It is a passion that serves a very real purpose. A quarter of UK emissions come from the home. Another 15% comes from public and commercial buildings.

10:10:10 was the date chosen for the first UK Passivhaus Student Research Conference. Thanks to course directors and tutors like Sofie Pelsmaker, together with a new wave of students aware of a global emergency and passionate to be a part of the solution, architectural education is moving into a new era integrating design and building physics. At last students have access to a scientific method of designing energy efficient buildings, with instant feed-back loops. The empowerment that results is stimulating a rapidly growing interest in research at schools of architecture across the UK.

Following the huge success of the North London conference in February, which was fully booked in a week with a waiting list of more than 100 people, a much bigger, national conference will take place this Autumn (again in London) with a much wider outreach. The steering group is putting together an exciting programme which includes a low-cost exhibition of carefully selected, high quality suppliers.

Watch this space for more information coming soon.

I am looking forward to participating in this conference. Emigration to Wales is on the cards…..

The project was made possible by the Islington Council Climate Change Fund with an unprecedented spending budget of £3 million. Each spring Germany’s Passivhaus Institute holds its annual conference within a European city. The conference probably represents the largest gathering of low energy construction research academics and professionals in the world and without a doubt it presents the most experienced, the most scientific and the most professional low energy and ecological papers presented to construction professionals at any single international conference.
