BRE and bere:architects have come together to bring you an Airtightness Master Class.
The BRE has been involved in airtightness testing, research and consultancy for nearly 30 years and Mike Jaggs is their leading expert. Bere:architects were amongst the first to use advanced air tightness techniques developed in Europe, and where appropriate, have developed some of these techniques for UK conditions.
Lecture at Bartlett School of Architecture on Passivhaus Retrofit as part of architecture student's Low Energy Retrofit module.
11.05-11.30 The Science and Art of Passivhaus - what are the design principles and what does this mean; what can be achieved in terms of low energy building, whilst providing high standards of comfort and building health? Justin Bere, bere:architects
11.30-11.50 Passivhaus - destroying the cost barriers Richard Whidborne, DIrector, E-Griffin Consulting and Nick Newman, Associate Director & Certified Eurpean Passivhaus Designer, bere:architects
This session will introduce the principles which lie behind Passivhaus, examine the varying techniques and materials for Passivhaus construction, including timber frame and masonry approaches, and the Passivhaus Multi-Comfort concept.
16.00 – 16.20 The Larch House: adapting advanced timber framing techniques from Europe for the UK market
Justin Bere, Self builder and Architect, Bere Architects
This seminar will give an overview of the Passivhaus standard and the importance of careful planning at the early stages of Passivhaus design. It will cover issues such as building orientation and fabric, air tightness strategy, thermal bridging and the importance of triple glazing in the UK. The session will explain how Passivhaus fits in with existing UK standards. It will include contributions from experienced practitioners showcasing leading Passivhaus projects and provide examples of cost data when compared to UK building regulations and other standards.
11.35 – 12.00 Practical research and development: Design, Detail, Costs, Performance, Health & Air Quality monitoring Justin Bere, bere:architects
The Designing and building with Passivhaus principles stream - this series of seminars combines an introduction to Passivhaus with more detailed sessions, using case studies of a range of building types. They will address a variety of aspects of Passivhaus, including: design, alignment with regulations, cost, applicability for refurbishment, implications for the supply chain, and how a wider market can be created for the standard.
14.55 - 15.15 How to create a comfortable, highly insulated, draught-free Passivhaus building starting with the building envelope Sarah Lewis, Associate Director, Bere Architects
Passivhaus consists of a set of principles which can be applied to all buildings, not just to those of a domestic nature. Using case studies, this session will explore the non domestic application of Passivhaus principles.
16.45 – 17.10 Case study - Mayville Community Centre: the UK’s first Passivhaus Certified non domestic refurbishment Justin Bere, Self builder and Architect, bere:architects
This session pitches excellent design with outstanding sustainability credentials. What is the relationship between the two? How can self builders achieve both?
12.55 – 13.15 The Muse: Bere family home - Justin Bere, Self-builder and Architect, Bere Architects
Designing for maximum solar gain and optimal thermal efficiency and air tightness will mean that your property requires very little heating and is therefore low-cost and environmentally friendly. This is good design at its best. This session gives examples of how self-builders are designing to Passiv Haus standards and maximising the benefits of careful design, producing low-cost comfortable eco-homes which require minimal space heating.
14.40 – 15.00 How to achieve an assisted-self-build Passivhaus for under £100,000 - Justin Bere, Self-builder and Architect, Bere Architects
